Sample letter: Death in school district

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian,

It is with sadness that I write to you today to let you know that XXXXXXX has died. Sudden death is tragic and can have a profound effect on children. It is important for us to recognize this and offer assistance to children dealing with the tragedy.

In addition to the family and friends who have suffered this loss, your child may have questions about death. I suggest you talk with them about their feelings. Some students may need additional guidance in dealing with or talking about grief. Our school district will have counselors available to talk with students. If you think your child needs to speak with a counselor, please do not hesitate to contact XXXXXXXXXX .

The teachers and staff have been briefed on how to respond to questions about this situation and we will try to maintain as normal a routine as possible given these circumstances.
