BunkerHill CUSD#8Brings Tele- HealthService toFamilies Bunker Hill Community Unit School District #8 in southern Macoupin County has brought tele-health services to each of its schools. Partnering with Hazel Health, the rural district located in a Federally-designated medically-deprived area, has taken advantage of advances in technology to improve learning conditions for students, as well as healthcare access for all families. The service officially began in mid-February after an enrollment drive secured approximately 30 percent of the district’s families to “opt in” to the optional service. While not designed to take the place of a primary care physician, the virtual “doctor on-demand” service occurs in the school during the school day. Bunker Hill CUSD #8 Superintendent Todd Dugan hopes the service will help to alleviate an additional burden from parents—the majority of whom are employed in nearby communities. One of the main reasons the district pursued this option was to provide HIPAA and FERPA-compliant school-based healthcare for minor ailments (earaches, sore throats, etc.) in order to ensure that all are healthy and ready to learn. By gaining access to this tele-health service, many minor visits can be initiated by the district’s registered nurse, who can obtain a diagnosis and secure access to over-the- counter medication without missing a day of learning or wages for parents.
